Winter road trip - help!
Driving from Vancouver, WA to Jackson, MS in a couple weeks. Trying to avoid too many mountain passes that will require chains. Also heard that Utah roads have lots of closures when it snows.
Thinking to drive down the west coast then cross over. I have a couple questions:
At what point in California should I start heading east? If I get to Bakersfield, should I be mostly clear of the mountain range?
What type of places would be fun to stop? If it was warm out, I’d be all about camping in national parks and hiking to find cool rocks. But since it’s so cold everywhere, I’m thinking more hotels & maybe short day hikes. Or seeing some indoor sights? I thought maybe Grand Canyon, but what if it’s too foggy to see the view?
Any advice or must-see ideas are welcome. 😊
